All Students: Prior to starting your rotation, please respond to Dr McAdoos's e-mail regarding site/rotation requests. You will then receive your rotation schedule and any further announcements by email.


View and print the educational objectives for your anesthesiology rotation.


View "An Introduction to Anesthesia", a PowerPoint presentation authored by Billynda McAdoo, MD.


View and print several copies of the evaluation form. These evaluations are to be completed by the residents and attending with whom you work. Try to give to those you worked with most often since they will best be able to evaluate you.


View and print a case log for your anesthesiology rotation.

EMORY – Report at 6:45 a.m. to Drs. McAdoo, Matkins, or Lawson, Department of Anesthesiology reception area, EUH 3rd floor, B-Wing.  Conference schedule and location available from Dianne Byrd (Dianne.byrd@emoryhealthcare.org) (404) 778-5965.

GRADY – Report at 6:45 a.m. to Dr. Harris or Dr. Segeleon at the OR front desk.

ASC – Report at 6:45 am to Dr. John Gordon Morrow M.D. or Fleet Lester chief anesthetist, Clinic Building B, T-level outpatient surgery. 404-617-5288.

CHOA at EGLESTON – Report to 3rd floor, new tower at 6:45 am.  Look for secretaries Myrtice or Carol who will get in touch with Dr. Faye Evans, Dr. Kim Singer, Dr. David Pae or charge anesthesiologist.

Obstetric Anesthesia at Emory University Hospital Midtown (OB EUHM) – Report at 7:00 am, 3rd floor Labor and Delivery ward. Ask for Dr. Dolak or Dr. Bramwell. If they are not available, please ask for the anesthesiologist covering OB for the day.

Student Responsibilities Anesthesiology Rotation

 

Pre-Operative Responsibilities:

  1. Perform a full in-patient pre-anesthetic evaluation under the guidance of an anesthesiology attending or resident. Please refer to the Pre-anesthetic evaluation section of the Learning Objectives document. A copy of this evaluation must be submitted at the end of the week.

  2. Start an IV. Please document on case log.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities:

  1. Assist resident with room set-up. This should include a machine check and preparation of appropriate anesthetic medications.

  2. Place ASA monitors on patient and assist with placement of any additional invasive monitors

  3. Assist resident and attending with induction of anesthesia and management of the airway. Please document all airway procedures performed on case log.

  4. Assist with positioning the patient.

  5. Assist resident with maintenance of anesthesia.

  6. Assist resident and attending with emergence of anesthesia including extubation.

Post-Operative Responsibilities:

  1. Assist resident with transport to PACU and participate in sign-out of patient to the PACU nurse. Please document on case log that you personally performed one PACU sign-out.

  2. Perform a post-operative visit within 24-48 hours on a patient who was admitted after surgery. Please document in case log.

Case Goals:

Minimal Number of cases and procedures to perform and observe during the week. Please document all cases and procedures in case log.

    Arterial line Placement - 1
    Central Venous Placement - 1
